Druk Path Trek
One of the most popular Bhutan treks, the Druk Path Trek, is a short and relatively easy hike across the spectacular Bhutanese landscape between Paro and Thimphu.
This six-day Bhutan Package offers scenic trails amid lush forests of green Bhutan and across yak herder camps. It also lets you peep into the nomadic way of life in the remote mountain villages.
We hike at altitudes ranging from 2400 metres to 4200 metres. Our campsites are in gorgeous settings such as near dzongs and monasteries and by the lakeside. And, with the snow-capped Himalayan views in the background, everywhere.
The best time to visit Bhutan for the Druk Path Trek is between March and June and between September and November. During our Bhutan travel, the entire team will accompany us to every camp. Our cook will prepare all meals at the campsite.
So, join us on this classic trek in the Kingdom of Happiness. Learn interesting Bhutan facts as we hike a part of its breathtaking terrain.
Priceless memories guaranteed!
Day 1
A trek from Paro to JiliDzong. Camping overnight below JiliDzong.
Today is the first day of our trekking in Bhutan. Brace yourselves for a 4-5 hour, arduous ascent of 1090 metres to get to the medieval JiliDzong. We trek uphill for 7 kilometres, starting from Paro’s Ta Dzong, a conch shell-shaped cultural museum. After a half-hour of following a gravel road by some farms, our trail ascends a steep cliff and then takes us to DamcheGonpa amid blue pines and firs. Once we arrive at the narrow hill below JiliDzong, we climb down about 100 metres to our campsite (3480 metres).
Day 2
A trek from JiliDzong to Jangchulakha. Overnight camping in Jangchulakha.
Today, we’re going to cover 10 kilometres with an ascent of 310 metres and a descent of 50 metres. On this 4-5 hour trek to the yak-inhabited Jangchulakha, we initially ascend sharply for about 90 minutes. Then our trail flattens a bit, making our climb more gradual. It’s a scenic trail through alpines and dwarf rhododendrons of green Bhutan. At Jangchulakha, enjoy the typically rustic sight of herders with their grazing yaks around our campsite (3770 metres).
Day 3
A trek from Jangchulakha to JimilangTsho Lake. Camping overnight near the lake.
We ascend 330 metres towards the gorgeous JimilangTsho Lake (3870 metres), which is popular for its giant-sized trout. We follow a ridge, covering 11 kilometres in about 4 hours to get to this piece of paradise with the magnificent Himalayan mountains as a backdrop.
If the weather’s clear, we can see the beautiful reflection of the snow-clad Himalayas in JimilangTsho’s crystal-clear waters. Live it up in this divine landscape of magical Bhutan and let thoughts cease as we camp near the surreal lake.
Day 4
A trek from JimilangTsho Lake to SimkotraTsho Lake. Overnight camping near SimkotraTsho Lake.
Today, it’s again an 11-kilometre, 4-hour trek to yet another surreal lake of beautiful Bhutan. We’re heading for the large, glacial SimkotraTsho Lake (4110 metres), a popular camping site for this Bhutan Package.
We ascend 820 metres amid a forest of dwarf rhododendrons and pass Jane Tso Lake to reach our destination. On the way to SimkotraTsho Lake, we’ll likely come across a few yak herder camps.
Indeed, it’s an excellent opportunity to briefly understand the nomadic lifestyle before we camp near the lake.
Day 5
A trek from SimkotraTsho Lake to Phajoding Monastery. Camping overnight above the monastery (3750 metres).
Today, we begin our 10-kilometre, 3-4 hour trek, climbing steadily towards a mountain pass. It’s an ascent of 130 metres. We can get the ultimate Bhutan travel experience of viewing Mount Gangkar Puensum from this point in clear weather. The 7570-metred monster is Bhutan’s highest and the world’s tallest unclimbed mountain.
From the mountain pass, we descend towards Phajoding Monastery. This former wealthiest monastery of the Kingdom of Happiness has numerous temples, meditation retreats, and monastic residences, all denoting the immaculate style of Bhutan architecture.
Day 6
A trek from Phajoding Monastery to Motithang suburb in Thimphu. Overnight stay in a hotel in Thimphu.
It’s the last day of our trekking in Bhutan. Today is Motithang, an upmarket suburb in the capital city of Thimphu and an accurate representation of luxurious Bhutan. We leave the Phajoding Monastery and walk downhill for 3 hours through a thick forest of blue pines.
Our trail is a 4-5 kilometre, leisurely walk and a descent of 1130 metres. Finally, we arrive at our waiting vehicle and proceed to our hotel in Thimphu for a well-deserved shower.
After freshening up, we can spend the remaining day at leisure. How about shopping for some souvenirs at Handicrafts Lane to take back home?
